EPISODE  IV:  A NEW HOPE

As most of us now know, Obi-Wan Kenobi presented Luke Skywalker with his father's Lightsaber in Episode IV. Luke would begin his journey "into a larger world" using this Lightsaber.

Graflex flash in use during WWII This Lightsaber was constructed from a vintage Graflex 3-cell flash unit. This flash unit saw heavy use during World War II.

Modifications to the original flash were not extensive. The reflector hood was removed (it was designed to be removable), 6 windshield wipers presumably from a British military vehicle were added for grips, a D-Ring was added to the bottom, and a bubble-display from a 1970's calculator was installed into the clamp assembly (which originally held the flash to the camera).

Shown at right is a picture of my Luke Skywalker Episode IV lightsaber. It was constructed from a vintage Graflex flash unit, with a replacement clamp that I constructed from aluminum.

Many photography collectors cringe at the idea of creating a Lightsaber from a Graflex flash as they feel it destroys the value of the flash. I tend to agree with them. Not to worry. The bottom half of this saber is a replica created from aluminum tubing. The original bottom half is still in original condition, and the flash still works if I swap out the bottom half.

EPISODE V: THE  EMPIRE   STRIKES  BACK

Luke continued to rely on his father's Lightsaber in Episode V. A few slight modifications were made to the prop: Small screws or rivets were installed to keep the grips from coming off, the D-Ring assembly was changed, and the bubble-display was replaced with a computer edge-card connector. In addition, the "glass-eye" test lamp was removed and replaced with a second red button.

Luke lost this saber in his duel with Darth Vader at Bespin when his hand was severed. Shown at left is my version of this saber. It is created from a genuine Graflex top-half, with resin replacement buttons, a home-made clamp assembly, and a replica bottom made from aluminum.

EPISODE VI: RETURN  OF   THE  JEDI

Having lost his father's Lightsaber at Cloud City, Luke returned to Obi-Wan Kenobi's home on Tatooine, where he constructed a new Lightsaber. Reminiscent of the design of Kenobi's, Luke continues to use this saber in his fight against the Dark Side.

There is evidence that there were at least 3 different versions of this prop created for Episode VI. Shown here is a version 1. It is believed that this saber was completely custom-machined for Return of the Jedi. Shown at left is a picture of my Luke Skywalker Episode VI Lightsaber. Just like the actual prop, this saber was custom machined. I acquired this saber in a trade with someone.

Version 2 of this saber closely resembles version 1, except it has a clamp from a Graflex flash around it for the activator plate, and a different pommel.

The mysterious 3rd version is rumored to have originally been a stunt version of Obi-Wan Kenobi's saber in Episode IV.
